The Unsung Hero Awards 2018 were presented at a dinner ceremony at The Principal Hotel in Manchester. All shortlisted nominees and their nominators were invited to a free-to-attend night that promised to be a very special event from beginning to end. The winners were annouced at the awards ceremony on 23 February 2018.
Andy Burnham was elected as Mayor of Greater Manchester in May 2017.
Prior to this Andy was MP for Leigh from 2001. In government, Andy has held Ministerial positions at the Home Office, Department of Health and the Treasury. In 2008 he became Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, before returning to Health as Secretary of State in 2009.
In opposition, Andy has served as Shadow Education Secretary, Shadow Health Secretary and Shadow Home Secretary.
Andy lives in Leigh, Greater Manchester, with his wife and three children. He is a keen supporter of Everton FC.
Karen is an interim Chief Executive at the Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust. Karen joined the Trust from NHS Improvement, the national organisation which supports NHS providers and local health systems. She was most recently working with NHS Improvement to lead work on improving urgent care service delivery across England. Before this she was chief executive at North Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust and has a professional background in NHS finance. She is a graduate in genetics from the University of Liverpool.
Mark is the Operations Manager of Online Innovations Ltd. which owns and operates both GoToJobBoard (the hosts of the Unsung Hero Award) and the Unsung Hero Awards itself. Mark has been involved with the Unsung Hero Awards from the very beginning in 2015 when only 25 nominations were received and he travelled the length of the country to award the 3 lucky winners. The Awards are now in their 4th year and this year have received over 400 nominations for more than 1,100 nominees and will be holding a live ceremony at the prestigious Principal Hotel in Manchester City Centre. Mark is incredibly passionate about rewarding the hard working non-medical NHS staff that so often get over looked and is committed to making this event the “Go To” event for ALL non-medical NHS people in the future.
