Nominators Answer

Nominee's story :

Mel Crawford is an Operational Manger in the Serco team at Newham Hospital and an integral part of the operations team. She delivers a broad range of services, covering healthcare cleaning, patient dining, and general management across the site, and is always willing to support hospital teams in ensuring delivery of seamless patient care. Mel is extremely reliable, respected, loyal, and hard-working. Her dedication to the site and support of care for our patients, staff and visitors is always of the highest standard. Throughout the pandemic, Mel’s dedication to the hospital and flexibility in her role became even more apparent. During both peaks of the pandemic, Mel did long days on site – arriving at work at the crack of dawn and being one of the last to leave and spending many weekends at the hospital – she went above and beyond. Despite the pressures everyone was under, she always took – and still takes – the time to meet with and check-in on staff, particularly those working nights and weekends. Mel did all of this while being far away from her family and loved ones, who live in the far corners of Scotland. During both peaks of the pandemic, Mel went months without seeing them so she could continue to work at Newham Hospital and support its staff and patients. A trusted, well-respected colleague to all, Mel always leads from the front and took on every challenge that came her way over these last 18 months with a positive attitude. In the fast-paced, ever changing world of Covid-19, Mel was the ‘go-to’ person and subject matter expert at our hospital for arranging ward moves, deep-cleans and other such services, no matter the hour, day or night. Before the pandemic, Mel was already well known and well respected by staff at all levels of Newham Hospital. This has only increased since the Covid-19 breakout, when she has on countless occasions gone above and beyond in her role to make sure the hospital runs smoothly and patients are cared for. She did all of this while not seeing her family, still looking out for and checking in on her staff and with a positive attitude that is unrivalled. It is a pleasure to work with Mel and an honour to have her on our team.
