Nominators Answer

Nominee's story :

Zena set up the Medical Examiner Service at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS. This was a completely new service to implement and develop during Covid. This meant Zena needed to liaise with various Clinical Leads and Doctors in order to put processes in place to ensure the timely review of hospital deaths to ensure there is no impact on the bereaved family. Once this service had been piloted with a few wards Zena then implemented the roll out of the service to the hospital in general. Zena developed a training package for clinicians in relation to who and what the Medical Examiner Service is about and why it has been implemented. This training is provided to all new Doctor intake with a separate training for A & E due to there being differences in processes between A & E and wards. During this time Zena also attended personal training courses to assist with supporting her staff with things such as Mental Wellbeing and becoming a Steps 4 Wellness Champion in the process. When I started in post Zena provided me with process maps, training manuals and the necessary papers I need to complete within my first 12 months in post. Zena constantly takes time out of her day to support both my colleague and myself, this can be anything from workload to personal issues. Zena is always available to discuss issues which may arise in the course of the day. She will take time to explain something and help find resolutions which work. Zena is constantly aware of changes in legislation and will filter this accordingly within a timely manner ensuring that the team are working to the latest statutory guidance and as a service are compliant with the regulatory requirements. Zena has also then rolled the Medical Examiner Service out to Primary Care Networks (Community GP’s) as the Medical Examiner Service review the expected and natural deaths which occur even in the community. Again, this involved Zena liaising with stakeholders such as GP’s Clinical Leads and IT services to ensure a system which encompasses all the information required by the service with as little impact on the GP. In order to ensure the service is running to a high standard Zena requested feedback from surgeries and has amended our processes to assist with ensuring the best way of working which supports the GP’s and also the requirements of the Medical Examiner Service, changing processes where needs be to ensure minimal impact on both the GP and practice staff. On the whole Zena goes above and beyond for her staff and the service which she leads.
